I have now 6 of the 10 main songs as radio versions and I have a little mixed feeling. Here is my rating of the songs that I heard in full until now:

1. Invoke the Machine (first didn't catch me so much, but was a little growing. Is more in the heavier power metal direction) I give it a 7/10

2. Sleepwalking (hmmm doesn't really catch me and I normally like softer parts) so a 5,5/10

3. Where Clock Hands Freeze (the best and most impressing song so far, has a better and more direct melody style than songs like Wastelands and Shelter from the Rain. I still miss the high scream of Tobi in his part, but this is a minor thing) so a 9/10

4. Black Orchid (I like the Nightwish and Epica like orchestration, but somehow it reminds me on a song. Quite powerful and a little bit like Vain Glory Opera) so a 8/10

5. Watchmaker's Dream (this songs doesn't do much to me, even after listening several times. It has a little power metal beginning and the verses are quite ok, but the chorus is very weak. It always repeats the title) so a 6/10

6. What's left of me (a really good and touching ballad) so a 8/10

Here is the interview and review of German Metal Hammer, which rated the album 5/7 and it reached 12th place in soundcheck:

I translated only a few statements, since there are not many new things:

New Avantasia interview with Tobias Sammet in Metal Hammer (German edition) April 2013. It also includes a review of the new album Avantasia - "The mystery of time", the soundcheck, the new tour announced as tour of the month and an advertising. The promo CD of this edition includes 'Invoke the Machine' as the featured song. Here are some excerpts:

Tobi about musicians that he would love to have on a follow up record: “Once in the future, I would love to have Bruce Dickinson on one of my records, this is a long time dream. I fear that chances are low to realize this dream. Bruce is easy to deal with, but the management takes care for the exclusiveness of Iron Maiden. I do understand this. But I will never give up on this, since Bruce was a big idol for me. Paul Stanley would be great as well. But until now, there is no concrete talking to either of them.”

Tobi about adding a real orchestra on stage:” Live on stage there is so much noise, that the audience won’t hear, if a real plays or a programmed orchestra sound is used. Even on records, only non musicians recognize a little difference. Live, there is no difference. I think it would only disturb, if there 60 more instruments with sound pick-ups, which would record all the noise on stage.”

Tobi about Russel Gilbrook: “Russel missed his first flight, since he thought that he would fly in the evening at 11pm. But to be true: what sense does it make to do soundcheck in the middle of the night and then recording songs? …We organized new flights for him and he appeared then in the end.”

I just listened to Where Clock Hands Freeze and Black Orchid!

Where Clock Hands Freeze - it sounds like a better song compared to both Wastelands and Shelter From The Rain to me, BUT the guitar solo section is unimpressive and rather short (especially knowing that both Sascha and Hartmann play on there). Still Michi sounds absolutely awesome and the song is a solid 9/10.

Black Orchid - a very good song, with great orchestrations, a nice chorus and a good performance by Biff. Again a very short and unimpressive guitar solo, especially for an almost 7 minute song! Still a very good song, so a 8/10.

These 2 songs have fueled my anticipation for the album, which was really down due to Sleepwalking and Invoke The Machine.

After listening to the full album (please don't send any requests for links via pm. Please don't try it at all, since I won't answer. Sorry  ), here is my full review after a few listening sessions:

1. Spectre (good intro with orchestra, the main song is really good and catchy as well. i still don't like so much this instrumental part between 3:50 - 4:50. In my opinion this doesn't fit to the song.) so a 7,5-8/10

2. Watchmaker's Dream (this songs doesn't do much to me, even after listening several times) so a 6/10

3. Black Orchid (I like the Nightwish and Epica like orchestration. That song even grow on me and is now one of my favorites.) so a 8/10

4. Where Clock Hands Freeze (the best and most impressive song so far, has a better and more direct melody style than songs like Wastelands and Shelter from the Rain. I still miss the high scream of Tobi in his part, but this is a minor thing. After listening to the full album this song is without a doubt my favorite song and will stay so for a long time) so a 9,5/10

5. Sleepwalking (hmmm doesn't really catch me and I normally like softer parts) so a 5/10

6. Savior in the Clockwork (hmmm, reminds me a little bit on Edguy 'Rock of Cashel', but it has Kiske only with 10 seconds  I only like a little bit the 2nd half of the song. ) so a 6/10

7. Invoke the Machine (first didn't catch me so much, but was a little growing. Is more in the heavier power metal direction) I give it a 7/10

8. What's left of me (a really good and touching ballad) so a 8/10

9. Dweller in a Dream (this sounds again very much like Edguy and I would like to talk to the reviewers who said it is speed metal. It is definately not a speed/power metal song, it is more like uptempo hard rock. The chorus really stays in your mind and I probably rated it a little lower first, because of the wrong expectations from the reviews. It is reallly a good song.) so a 7,5-8/10

10. The Great Mystery (this is also one of my favorites and here the orchestra works perfectly. Some reviewers said it has much of Meat Loaf, but I would say more that it has much of Savatage and Trans Siberian Orchestra, especially the orchestration. I would have preferred Kiske singing in this song instead of the 10 seconds in 'Savior in the Clockwork') so a 8,5/10

After some more listening, 2 songs really grew on me, so I updated my fist review. I rated now Spectres with 8/10. It is really a good and catchy song. I also like now Dweller in a Dream more and rate that one now with 8/10. I probably rated it lower first due to wrong expectations rised by reviewers point of view. But also one song is now lower rated as before, that one is Savior in the Clockwork. It is now a 6,5/10 and I only like a little bit the 2nd part of the song.

Unfortunately I was wrong to get my hope up. I just listened to the album and I’m sad to say that I was not very impressed. The songwriting is just not that great, compared to previous albums. I also found the absence of long and technical guitar solos, even on the longest songs, very negative.

1. Spectres – Good song but nothing truly amazing. It is a bombastic hard rock track with orchestration. The intro is very impressive and the chorus is catchy. Tobi sings almost on the entire track and does a good job. As Nightangel mentioned the middle part doesn’t really fit with the rest of the music (especially with the last chorus part). 7-7,5/10

2. Watchmaker's Dream – This is just an average up-tempo rock track (with double-bass drumming). The short guitar solo and the organ solo are cool. Turner’s (weak) performance doesn’t grab me much and the chorus is bad. According to my taste a weak song 5/10

3. Black Orchid – One of the best songs on the album. Good orchestral parts, atmospheric and a good chorus. 8/10

4. Where Clock Hands Freeze – I agree that this is the best song on the album. Still the guitar solo part could be much better and the song could be a little longer as well. Kiske is mindblowing here. 9/10

5. Sleepwalking – The weakest song and probably one of the worst ballads Tobias has written. 4/10

6. Savior in the Clockwork – This is a strange track, but it is rather good. The intro is epic and the chorus is big and catchy. The middle part is strangely arranged. It is of course truly unforgivable that Kiske sings only for 10 seconds in between Byfford and does some short backing vocals (when Sammet sings before him). Overall not amazing. 7/10

7. Invoke the Machine – The song is not bad, but doesn’t do much for me. Attkin’s performance is very nice, nice guitars and the longest guitar solo on the album. The chorus is a little weak and the song is strangely arranged. The heaviest song on the album. 6/10

8. What's Left of Me – Nice ballad with a good performance by Martin. The lyrics sound strange (without knowing the story). One of Tobi's better ballads, better than Cry Just A Little, for example 7,5-8/10

9. Dweller in a Dream – Strangely just a good song. I definitely was expecting more of this song (from the reviews). As Nightangel mentioned it is basically an Edguy song. I don't like the part before the last chorus (but that's me). Kiske is good here, nothing too impressive (there is also a strange raspy ending on his very final note). 7,5/10

10. The Great Mystery – The second best song on the album. A big ballad-type of song with a heavier part towards the start, similar a little to Runaway Train. Something between Magnum and Savatage. The chorus is very good and the song contains a nice orchestral part towards the end. Again, for me, this song also contains some strange tempo changes that don’t always work perfectly. Overall a good epic song and much better than Journey To Arcadia for me. (Kiske would have been good for this song, I agree) 8,5/10

This will probably be the weakest Avantasia album to date for most. For me, The Mystery of Time is a better album than Angel Of Babylon and the weakest one is still The Metal Opera II (sorry).

The album is definitely not bad and the orchestra is a very nice addition. Don't expect an "orchestral album" (based on the reviews), orchestra is used in intros, in some passages and in the background. The reviews really raised expectations for this album and unfortunately it didn't pull through. This is my second listen, so things might change but I don't expect miracles to happen. I will come back after a few days for a final rating.

yep, between my first listening session and later listening sessions there were only little changes about the rating like 0,5 higher or lower. And I often ask myself, if some reviewers really heard the same record. Nevertheless, I look forward to the new tour and hope they only add songs like 'Where clock hands freeze', 'The great Mystery' and 'Black orchid' from this record.
